Mittens snowflake pattern in a classic norwegian style. Front and back have different designs.

Size: approx. 20 cm/8" in circumference and 23.5 cm/9 1/4" long.

Materials: Junghans "Merino Supersoft" (100% pure wool, approx. 185 m/50 g): 50 g each in Natural, col 106-794, Mustard, col 106-801, Bordeaux, col 106-787, and Black, col 106-800; one set of size 3 mm Addi double-pointed needles (dpns).

Rib pattern: K1, p1.

Stockinette in rnds: K every rnd.

Fair Isle pattern: Work in Stockinette in Fair Isle technique according to charts A and B. Chart A shows pattern for top of hand and chart B shows pattern for palm of hand. Beg rnds with 28 sts of chart A, then work 28 sts of chart B. Work rnds from right to left. Charts show all rnds. 1 square = 1 st and 1 rnd. Follow chart key for colors used. Very loosely carry strand not in use across WS of work. Work rnds 1 - 62 once.

Tension: 28 sts and 31 rnds = 10 x 10 cm/4" x 4" in Fair Isle pat.

Right Mitten: With Black, cast on 56 sts. Arrange sts evenly on 4 dpns -14 sts per needle. Join for working in the round and place beg of rnd marker. Work in rib pat for 3.5 cm/1 3/8" = 15 rnds, then work in Fair Isle pat as foll:

First needle: Work 14 sts before arrow on chart A; 2nd needle: Work 14 sts after arrow on chart A; 3rd needle: Work 14 sts before arrow on chart B; 4th needle: Work 14 sts after arrow on chart B. Work in pat as established through chart rnd 18.

Next rnd (chart rnd 19) (thumb): Sl 12 sts on 3rd needle to safety pin (shown by black line on chart).

Next rnd (chart rnd 20): Cast on 12 sts over held sts. Cont in pat through chart rnd 49. 

Next rnd (chart rnd 50): Shape top of hand as foll: On first and 3rd needle, k1, SKP (sl1 kwise, k1, psso); on 2nd and 4th needle, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.

Repeat last dec rnd every foll rnd until 4 sts remain. Cut yarn, draw yarn end through remaining 4 sts and pull tight. Return 12 held thumb sts to your needles. Join yarn, k12, then pick up and k12 sts over the open edge of the hand = 24 sts total. Arrange sts evenly on 3 dpns - 8 sts per needle. Join for working in the round and cont in pat as established according to chart B for 15 rnds = 5 cm/ 2". 

Next dec rnd: K2tog around = 12 sts.

Next dec rnd: K2tog around = 6 sts. Cut yarn, draw yarn end through remaining 6 sts and pull tight. Weave in all ends on wrong side of work.

Left Mitten: Work same as for right mitten, working thumb across first 12 sts on 4th needle.
